Review | Suicide Squad

Just a quick disclaimer: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW!!! Therefore if you haven’t watched Suicide Squad and plan to with an open mind and no knowledge on what happens, I recommend you don’t read! But totally come back and read once you’ve watched it!

This was a film I was seriously looking forward to, whilst also being completely apprehensive about what was to occur! It’s no secret that I really didn’t enjoy Batman VS Superman and fun fact, I kept drifting to sleep in the cinema whilst watching! I am also more of a Marvel fan than a DC fan… Although I put all this to the back of my mind, it still made me slightly worried about what DC were going to do with Suicide Squad. Also with the bad reviews revolving around the internet I was completely convinced it was going to be a piece of poop! But…

I was SOOOO wrong!

I absolutely LOVED it! Suicide Squad had me sitting on the edge of my seat from the get go with the action starting pretty much from the opening credits! Unlike most films of this nature, it didn’t feel to drop at any moment! There was no moment through the film that I found myself looking at my watch to see what time it was, I was completely configured and captivated by the narrative; something which was completely different to what I was expecting!

From the trailer, I was expecting the story to be mainly focused upon The Joker; I was completely wrong! The story focuses upon The Enchantress, which I’m not going to complain about because she was a freakin’ awesome character! From the trailer it suggests The Joker is an integral part of the film, or so I interpreted, when in reality an audience witnesses him failing multiple times attempting to free Harley Quinn, until he finally suceeds in the end. However this doesn’t take away from the film because the plot is awesome with The Enchantress’ and there is a ton of action which was great to see!

What I also enjoyed was how DC are establishing an original identity for the Joker, limiting the comparison to previous actors’ approach to playing the crazy, immensely dark character! More importantly Heath Ledgers’ unforgettable acting as the Joker in the Dark Knight trilogy. I also read online that they based his new image on a modern crime leader with all of his tattoo’s resembling meaning rather than a cackling, purple-suited gangster! Not sure how true this is, but it is evident to see the transition of style! Personally, I wished they had included him more if it didn’t alter the narrative! Here’s hoping for more screen-time of the Joker in what they have lined up next which I am super excited for!

Personally, I feel the casting was actually really good! Although some actors are up and coming such as Cara Delevingne (even though she has been in multiple films recently), I don’t feel like this effected the film in any way like some people online are saying! I think that casting was spot on, especially Will Smith as DeadShot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn!

An issue that I did have with the narrative was the exclusion of some aspects of Harley Quinn and the Joker’s relationship. In a sense, they appeared to somewhat sugar-coat it by not including the violence and abuse that does occur within the comics and cartoons. I read online that they excluded these foundations to make the film less dark? That’s fine, but now we have an online presence with some people romanticising the idea of a Harley Quinn and Joker relationship which isn’t good! If you’re going to include two crazy characters that are in a relationship, at least show the truth behind their romance.

That’s it for the negative points! I loved the balance between the humour and seriousness. I think they balanced it perfectly and included it only in the right moments! The break up between action and establishing character back-stories were also balanced which made it much more enjoyable to watch!

Finally, I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the soundtrack and the songs fit perfectly for each scene! My personal favorite song from the soundtrack would be Sucker for Pain because it is so different to what you would normally hear! Although it wasn’t played through the film and only in the end credits, its still considered a part of the film right?

If you’re planning to watch Suicide Squad and are like me who isn’t particularly DC’s biggest fan, I’m pretty sure that this could convert you! It’s such a great film and is definitely in my top 20 list of favorite films of this year, possibly ever!
