A work in progress

“Je vais bientôt trouver mon chemin” is currently my favorite phrase, and is written in one of my favorite languages. Although I will most likely never be able to speak the language fluently, I can still appreciate how beautiful words and phrases are pronounced and spoken. This phrase translates to “I will soon find my way”, which is something I constantly keep telling myself for reassurance that I am not meant to know where I am going just yet.

Telling people that I aspire to become a freelance journalist/web designer is something that terrifies not only myself, but those who are also terrified for my life choices. Now that’s not saying that freelance is an awful career choice, because honestly the idea of free creativity, personal projects and creating for clients that are a fan of your individual style really excites me. I also understand that as soon as I have completed my degree I won’t be able to work for myself and will need to work for a company. Working for myself however, is the ultimate goal.

This means, finding my way to this ultimate goal regarding my career, as well as the pursuit to personal happiness, is going to include extremely turbulent times where I will just want to give up and continue my 9-5 job. I already feel as if I have experienced this. From September to now, (May 2017), I have pushed through some difficult situations and emotions that almost made me give up on my goals. Things build up and seem to explode all at the same moment, making things appear unsolvable and too difficult.

However, within all this pain and the rocky situations, I have discovered parts that I never knew about myself. I really enjoy reading and it wasn’t just something I enjoyed as a child. I have also discovered that poetry and writing in journals is therapy within itself and helps me disconnect with the world just long enough to compose my thoughts and feelings. I have discovered how much I want to travel this rock we call Earth and explore every single corner reachable. I have also realised how strong I actually am, and how I can do anything I want if I truly want it.

Although there has been a lot of pain throughout these few months, I have experienced so much that I never imagined I would and realised so much about myself through the bad. I can only anticipate the next months and years being similar to these few months I have experienced with such big changes to my life, maybe more difficult, maybe better. We will have to see. But as I said before, I will find my way soon and even if that’s not the near future, I am excited for the next chapter in my journey.

Music Recommendation Monday

Sadly I don’t feel like I have enough music to make a January playlist, as I’ve been listening to just a select few artists and albums. So I’ve decided to add this little feature because there are a few artist’s that I’ve wanted to speak about for so long.

photografie-severin-ettlin-dublinsued-dermotkennedy-2016-7241

The first artist I want to talk about is Dermot Kennedy. Dermot Kennedy is an Irish singer/songwriter and plays mainly folk and acoustic music. If you’re into heartfelt lyrics, heavy acoustic guitar playing and just pure emotion, his music is the one for you. His music is that type where every single part of the song sends a shiver down your spine. Not just the lyrics but also the dynamics in chords and the way he sings. The way he sings is so raw and heartfelt. You feel like you can feel every single emotion that inspired him to write the song, especially when he starts singing loud, almost shouting. Sadly, there are only 3 songs on Spotify at the minute. If you want to listen, you’re better off finding him on Youtube as he has a number of original’s and covers on there! He is currently writing/recording new music and I am so excited to hear what he’s created!

Favorite song of Dermot Kennedy: An Evening I Will Not Forget

0060252735391_600

The next recommendation is an album that I’ve had on repeat every night while going to sleep. I’m one of those that struggle to sleep sometimes and when I do, my go-to remedy is music, more specifically jazz music. I recommended a song off this album in my December playlist, and that album is Night Train by the Oscar Peterson Trio. This is such a good album to listen to wherever and whenever, but mainly when you’re wanting to relax or do work. Its no wonder that this was one of Oscar Peterson’s most successful albums. Peterson’s piano playing is something of a genius, with beautiful melodies particularly in the intro to Georgia On My Mind. Also, I don’t know who can even dare to use the high end of a piano and make them work except for Peterson.  This album to me really is what smooth jazz is about. Its also proof that music can be just as meaningful without lyrics and just instruments. If you’re struggling to find a way to chill out while your mind is racing, get on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, and listen to this album. You won’t be disappointed; its impossible.

Favorite song from Night Train: I Got It Bad and That’s Not Good

52128820

Finally, the last album to go onto my music recommendation is actually a soundtrack from a musical. This film and soundtrack is currently everything I’ve ever wanted and more from a film/soundtrack. La La Land has been a huge success and is pretty much displayed everywhere you look. I’m one of those who are completely obsessed with it and I’m not even mad about it. What I love mainly about the soundtrack is how different it is to other musicals out there. Having taken Performance Studies as an A-Level, I realised that the way to be successful in the industry singing-wise is if you can blast a song and not always sing in “head-voice”. However, this album completely challenges that, with Emma Stone singing mainly falsetto throughout the whole film apart from her audition piece. To me, this was really inspiring to see a musical be so successful without having the traditional musical theatre techniques and actually being able to sing them! Not only to mention, the soundtrack is inspired by jazz and Ryan Gosling sings and plays the piano? Its a win-win situation!

There is so much I could say about this film, soundtrack, message, characters, cinematography, but I’m gonna stop myself there!

Favorite song from La La Land: Audition (Fools Who Dream) and Epilogue.

Thank you so much for reading! Hope you’ve enjoyed and enjoy the recommendations.

Vinyl collection

This is a post I have wanted to do for a while now! I’ve had my record player for around 5 months and in this time, I have been spending (maybe a bit too much) money on some of my favourite albums! I’ve wanted a record player ever since my dad sold his, and after following a bunch of people on Instagram with vinyl’s, I knew I had to have one!

I got mine for my birthday off my boyfriend and I absolutely fell in love with it! People will say “yeah yeah, whatever. Just listen to Spotify and it’s just the same”. Honey, let me tell you now. It’s not at all the same! There’s just something about picking up a vinyl and buying it, placing it on the turntable and just listening to the pure sound. It’s completely different! Something you can only understand unless you have one!

Any who, I am here to present my collection of vinyl’s I have been collecting and purchasing over the last 5 months. At the moment, I’m only buying my favourite albums and artists as I haven’t got the money to buy artist’s that I only listen to every now and then! Since this post I have also got The Balcony by Catfish and the Bottlemen which I absolutely love!

Enjoy! X

December Playlist

Once again it has been about a month since I have updated my blog! I do apologise. November and the beginning of this month was deadline time and I was stressing out! I was procrastinating whilst stressing out about all the work I had to do… makes complete sense!

Any who, I’m back with another monthly playlist! I really enjoy making these and I think people actually enjoy some of the stuff I include, so I will continue to write them!

This month is a mixed one again! We have some indie classics, some new bands I have found such as Jaws and Circa Waves, some old favorites including The Smiths and Basement, as well as a hint of festivities with Frank Sinatra! It is quite a big list just because I am loving so much this month!

Let me know any recommendations you have for me to listen to. I’m always on the lookout for new music!

Enjoy! X

November Playlist

The weather gets colder and so my favourite season appears! This is by far the best time of year (besides all the deadlines!), where you can get cosy and layer up with jumpers and scarves. Not to mention the wonderful feeling of Christmas quickly approaching! The feeling of a new month brings new music! And since I haven’t done one of these posts since my August one, I decided to do a new one!

This months playlist is a strange one. There are about 5 different genres in one playlist and although there is nothing wrong with this, not everybody will like it. However, this playlist is a run down on some of my favourite genres out there and it’s what I’m loving this month! So I hope you enjoy a list a little bit!

Settling Into New Adventures

Nobody said that new chapters were going to be easy. We tend to forget that new adventures are still a part of life. A life where mistakes and sadness is going to happen as well as excitement and the happiest memories you will remember for years to come.

If you have been reading my blog for a while now, you will have followed my journey to university from the application to the first week of my “new adventure”. Well it’s been a few more weeks since I wrote my first post on my experience of university. Have things changed? Hell yes. Have feelings towards university changed? Completely!

In all honesty, I have found adapting to the university life seriously difficult. Alongside starting university, I also managed to get myself a job. I’m not going to sugar coat it, in my second week I was hating it and contemplating whether any of it was for me and what other paths I could go down. My mental health wasn’t too good and I was feeling really low. You’re probably thinking, “but Liv, you’re only in your fourth week. How much could have changed since then?”. So much has changed and for the better and I finally think, and hope, I’m beginning to fit in and adapt to the next three years of my life. Managing your time correctly and having a balance between everything helps.

Sometimes expectations aren’t always lived up to and this is what was holding me back. I was so caught up in university not being everything I expected to be, that I wasn’t enjoying what it actually is! University is hard work. The work load is crazy. You get support from lectures and your personal tutor, completely. But you don’t get the support like at college or sixth form. It is completely independent and this is a big change to adapt to! With me, I like to know I’m doing things correctly and didn’t have much confidence in my writing. However, I’m starting to change my mindset on that and I understand I am a good writer and just need guidance here and there!

I’ve learnt how to ask for help in life as well as at university. Sometimes, things get difficult and sometimes, you understand what it is you can do to resolve that difficulty in your life. For me, I was taking too many hours on at my new job. I was soooo worried about asking them to take some hours off that I was working and stressing about not completing my readings for lectures the next day, etc. Then I thought, this is my future that I need to be working towards as well as my mental health. The stress of knowing I wasn’t completing enough work with the tiredness I was feeling was seriously impacting on me so I changed it. It has helped so much!

As I said, I’m approaching week four and things are beginning to get more serious. University is kicking in and the work load is getting higher and higher, yet I’m feeling healthier and better every day which I’m so happy about! That is from making little changes in my life. Instead of trying to please others, I’m focussing on my own mental state and the way I feel.

Sometimes the portrayal of university is that it is easy to settle in and such an amazing experience that I feel the mixed opinions get lost in the freshers experience and the friendships that are made. Of course everybody is different! Yes, I am liking university and I have made some really cool friends! However, you’re not going to feel on top of the world and amazing at every point of this journey, (not just because of the hangover either!)

University is a big adaptation to your life and it can be difficult as is any other big changes in your life! I realised I didn’t like change but it has to happen in order to develop as a person as well as experience life. As I said, we tend to forget that new adventures are still a part of life. The new adventure is going to be difficult just as much as its going to be absolutely amazing!

First week of University!

Its finally here!

This week marks the start of my adventure to gaining a degree in Media and Communications. The start of new experiences, new friendships, a new chapter in my life. On the train to university, I couldn’t help but become overwhelmed with how much I was already stepping out of my comfort zone!

For the past 7 years of my life, I have travelled the same journey on the same bus route, with the same people having similar conversations day in and day out. However, on this particular sunny Monday, I was travelling alone with a book, travelling on an 8:07 train on my way to the second biggest city in the UK to begin the first week of my studies. For the whole summer, the idea of travelling alone terrified me and trains were never in question as a means of travel. But for university, it was my only option! Flash forward to today, five days after, I am already planning trips across the country to visit friends and explore new places on my own! Never would I have thought it would be this easy to face an anxious thought and understand that I am truly in control of my choices and life!

img_4998

I have never had an issue with talking to new people and making new friends, but when there are so many people from across the country in the same room as you, it becomes a completely terrifying activity to introduce yourself! Nevertheless, I have managed to get through the week without completely making an ass out of myself and showing myself up!

Since I’m commuting to university, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get the same experience as others that live on campus! Meeting new room-mates and creating a friendship group as soon as you get there, that sort of thing was much easier if you’re sharing a flat together! Even though I’m not in that positon, I went to one of the Freshers events with my best friend Ellie (love you gurl!) and we had THE best time ever! It was super fun and if you don’t drink too much, pretty cheap as well! We’re going to another on Monday and I am SOOO excited for it!

img_4956

Finally, even though I have lived near Birmingham all my life and travelled there a few times, I never realised how much I was actually missing out on and how little I had explored! The only times I usually went to Birmingham was to go to gigs and meet up with friends; therefore, I had never explored Digbeth and The Custard Factory. However, with the welcome week task that we had, I managed to see sites that I had never seen before! I’ll include some pictures below and also, here’s a link to the video we made for our task. We didn’t win a prize but hey-ho, we had a great day!

All in all, to sum up the week in one word it would have to be insightful! Its introduced me to what times to travel and not to get up late after a night out on your second day, oops! It’s allowed me to understand the different types of people outside of the safe four walls in a school building. It’s also made me realise how different the world is outside of everything you’re used to, as well as realising how my choice to go to university and study Media was the best decision I could have made!

I hope you have enjoyed and thank you for reading! xxx

The Disney Tag

It is no lie and no secret that I absolutely adore Disney! If you didn’t know that, where have you been?! I pretty much live for Disney and it keeps me happy when times are tough, gives me some great soundtracks for any mood I’m in as well as reminding me that growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional!

As my blog becomes more personal and I’m getting into the feel of the things I want to post, I’ve decided to start writing Disney posts! I know this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but some may like it and considering Disney is a part of my life, it only seems right to mention it every now and then! So to start the thread of Disney posts, it only feels right to begin with a Disney tag! Enjoy!

Favorite Disney movie?

Do you know how much of a difficult question this is for a Disney fan? I’d have to say my fave film of all time would be Peter Pan. From the opening credits the music turns me into a blubbering mess and I think it’s the most magical out of all!

Walt Disney World or Disneyland?

I’ve only ever been to one park and that’s Disneyland Paris. Even if I did visit any other park I don’t think it can beat DLP because I have so many memories there from when I was young and from recent trips!

Favorite Disney character?

This is so difficult! Okay I’m splitting it into categories!

Favorite princess- Rapunzel

Favorite villain- Dr. Facilier

Favorite classic character- Donald Duck

Favorite side kick- Pascal or Mushu

Favorite prince- Naveen from PATF

The First Disney Movie you remember seeing in the theatres

Not too exciting but I’m pretty sure it was Piglets Big movie… Not sure whether it was the first but its definitely the first one I remember!

What type of Disney item do you collect the most?

It used to be toys but recently it’s pins and ornaments!

Your favorite Disney song?

SOOOOO MANY! TOO MANY! Okay top 3 are Go The Distance from Hercules, Almost There from Princess and the Frog and Why Should I Worry from Oliver and Company!

Favorite attraction/ride at the parks

Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean!

What is your dream job at Disney?

Either a cast member on a attraction/parade or working in something to do with PR!

Who’s the park character you never want to miss meeting at the parks?

PETER PAN! I have the best interaction with Peter every single time I go to DLP and it makes my trip so happy and magical!

What’s your most treasured Disney item?

My Walt Disney pin. He is my hero and I love him so much for creating so much magic in my life and this world.

Which Disney voice actor would you most like to meet?

Robin Williams which I know will never be possible but I wish I could have met him. His voice as the genie is something that will always be my favourite!

Favorite Disney movie that’s not a classic/famous? Excluding Black Cauldron

Oliver and Company! I don’t think that’s very famous is it?

If you could say anything to Walt Disney right now, what would it be?

Your magic in this world has made me into a happier and more positive human being and I cannot thank you enough for that. Your magic will continue to inspire my life.

Your favourite parade/show at the parks?

Of course representing DLP, Magic on Parade, but Fantillusion was amazing when I saw it and I’m dying to see the Soundsational parade!

Your favourite Disney memory?

There are so many oh my gosh! Okay so just a few: when I met Peter Pan and he thought I was a pirate and interacted with me during the parade, when Peter Pan blew me a kiss on the float, when Eeyore ran away with me on his back through Adventureland and when Tigger came into the hotel arcade and started playing against me on a racing game!

Do you have a favorite pair of Mickey ears?

tumblr_static_cmmihubkrx4c048s808o888cc

My classic Minnie Mouse ones!

If you could, what ‘forgotten princess’ would you add to the official lineup?

Even though she’s not really a princess, Pocahontas for sure! Or Merida.

Your favourite princess dress/outfit?

Ariel’s town dress, the one in the Kiss The Girl scene!

Image result for ariel's town dress

Your favourite Disney soundtrack?

Peter Pan or The Princess and the Frog!

Favorite restaurant at the parks?

Its technically not in the park but Planet Hollywood or Anettes Diner!

How did you first discover the magic of Disney?

I was bought up with Disney since I was a baby, but I remember being 14 and watching Tangled at Christmas. After watching it I asked my mom whether we could go back to Disneyland Paris and the rest is history. I’ve loved Disney ever since!

Saddest moment in a Disney film?

Tangled when Eugene “dies”. No spoilers no spoilers!

Best Disney kiss

WHEN YOU REALISE EUGENE ISN’T DEAD AND HIM AND RAPUNZEL FINALLY KISS LIKE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR SINCE THE I SEE THE LIGHT SCENE! I get very emotional at that scene

If you could live in any world from a Disney movie, which would you choose?

Neverland all day e’ryday!

Which Disney princess has the best sidekick?

Rapunzel of course! Pascal is one of my favorites!

Are you the only one obsessed with Disney in your family?

It indeed run’s through the family! My mom, my auntie and my cousin are all Disney obsessed just like me!

Favorite hotel at the parks?

I love the Sequoia Lodge but the Disneyland Paris hotel is actually breathtaking and I’m happy I can even admit that I’ve stayed there!

Do you plan to have your honeymoon at a Disney park?

Is that a trick question? I plan to get married INSIDE a Disney park!

Post a picture of yourself that’s Disney-related

12985501_250873581929171_938426385616133708_n

Which Disney movie will always have a special place in your heart and for what reason?

There are three that mainly stick out for me.

  1. Tangled because it sparked the magic inside of me again.
  2. Snow White because I always remember watching it as a kid
  3. The Jungle Book because it was always my Grandpa’s favourite film and I miss him so when I watch it, it reminds me of him.

Autumn Tag

Featured image source

Autumn is my all time favorite season and if you didn’t know that, where have you been?! It’s all over my social media! I am completely obsessed with autumn/fall and can’t wait for summer to be over and done with so all the leaves can start changing colours, Halloween decorations to plaster the walls of shops , for sweet cookie smelling candles to be classified as appropriate for a household and to be cosy while its cold outside! With my hot chocolate by my side and to get in the full swing of autumn, I have decided to do the autumn tag. ENJOY!

Favourite thing about Autumn?
Definitely the comfort of your own home and the warmth of cuddly blankets! I don’t think there’s anything better than walking home at about 4pm and its beginning to get dark, getting your favorite PJ’s on, sticking your favorite film/music on your TV and snuggling up with a warm drink! Also the fashion is AMAZING in autumn due to all of those wooly tights and checkered scarves tucked up in your wardrobe finally making an appearance! Also, who doesn’t love coffee shops in the autumn?!

Favorite drink?
My favorite drink in the Autumn has to be a caramel cappuccino or a hazelnut latte; each from Costa! At home I will usually buy the sachet’s of cappuccino and add caramel syrup or the Cadbury highlight hot chocolates (they’re so cheap and so low in calories and taste AMAZING!)

Favorite scent/candle?
This is such a difficult question! I’d have to say my favorite autumn scent is Yankee Candle’s Strawberry Shortcake, Pain Au Raisin and Salted Caramel! The scent’s that smell like fresh-baked cookies or cakes are always a winner for me!

Favorite lipstick?
My favorite lipstick has to be Smother from Sleek’s range! It is a dark, purple berry colour. I love dark shades in the autumn and its the seasons where my pale skin can be accepted! Dark lipsticks, pale skin = my all time favorite look!

Go to moisturiser?
I love The Righteous Butter from Soap and Glory and the Coconut Body Butter from The Body Shop! My skin gets so dry in the autumn, so I find both of these moisturiser’s so nourishing for both my face and body!

Go to colour for eyes?
Reds, oranges and browns for sure! I usually avoid winged eyeliner in the autumn and stick to heavy shadows and a thin line on the top of my eye lid! This way I’m able to wear dark lipstick without feeling to bold in the daytime!

Favorite music to listen to?
Acoustic, folk and irish music! Even though this is my favorite music throughout the year, I absolutely love the comfort and cosy feel that acoustic can give with emotional lyrics and build up of guitar playing. Most importantly, I love listening to Once the Musical, Fleetwood Mac, Hoizer, Jamie Sloan and Vance Joy!

Favorite outfit to wear?
As I said, I absolutely adore autumn fashion. This is a tricky question! I’d have to go with either a baggy jumper and roll neck with skinny jeans or woolly tights with a dress and a cardigan!

Autumn Treat?
This year, I can already tell that my autumn treat will be buying a new vinyl to make the mood even cosier in my room! I also love buying a new jumper or some new season scented candles!

Favorite place to be?
Once again, I have to pick more than one! I love either being in a coffee shop with a warm hot coffee, a book or my notepad writing new blog ideas or lyrics, OR cosy in my bed writing blog posts and reading!

They are all the questions in this tag!

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I loved writing this. It has truly allowed me to get that autumn feeling and now I want to go and get my checker scarves out!

I am tagging anybody who loves autumn as much as I do!

Review | Suicide Squad

Just a quick disclaimer: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW!!! Therefore if you haven’t watched Suicide Squad and plan to with an open mind and no knowledge on what happens, I recommend you don’t read! But totally come back and read once you’ve watched it!

This was a film I was seriously looking forward to, whilst also being completely apprehensive about what was to occur! It’s no secret that I really didn’t enjoy Batman VS Superman and fun fact, I kept drifting to sleep in the cinema whilst watching! I am also more of a Marvel fan than a DC fan… Although I put all this to the back of my mind, it still made me slightly worried about what DC were going to do with Suicide Squad. Also with the bad reviews revolving around the internet I was completely convinced it was going to be a piece of poop! But…

I was SOOOO wrong!

I absolutely LOVED it! Suicide Squad had me sitting on the edge of my seat from the get go with the action starting pretty much from the opening credits! Unlike most films of this nature, it didn’t feel to drop at any moment! There was no moment through the film that I found myself looking at my watch to see what time it was, I was completely configured and captivated by the narrative; something which was completely different to what I was expecting!

From the trailer, I was expecting the story to be mainly focused upon The Joker; I was completely wrong! The story focuses upon The Enchantress, which I’m not going to complain about because she was a freakin’ awesome character! From the trailer it suggests The Joker is an integral part of the film, or so I interpreted, when in reality an audience witnesses him failing multiple times attempting to free Harley Quinn, until he finally suceeds in the end. However this doesn’t take away from the film because the plot is awesome with The Enchantress’ and there is a ton of action which was great to see!

NEJcp05zkGZ8MN_1_b

What I also enjoyed was how DC are establishing an original identity for the Joker, limiting the comparison to previous actors’ approach to playing the crazy, immensely dark character! More importantly Heath Ledgers’ unforgettable acting as the Joker in the Dark Knight trilogy. I also read online that they based his new image on a modern crime leader with all of his tattoo’s resembling meaning rather than a cackling, purple-suited gangster! Not sure how true this is, but it is evident to see the transition of style! Personally, I wished they had included him more if it didn’t alter the narrative! Here’s hoping for more screen-time of the Joker in what they have lined up next which I am super excited for!

Personally, I feel the casting was actually really good! Although some actors are up and coming such as Cara Delevingne (even though she has been in multiple films recently), I don’t feel like this effected the film in any way like some people online are saying! I think that casting was spot on, especially Will Smith as DeadShot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn!

An issue that I did have with the narrative was the exclusion of some aspects of Harley Quinn and the Joker’s relationship. In a sense, they appeared to somewhat sugar-coat it by not including the violence and abuse that does occur within the comics and cartoons. I read online that they excluded these foundations to make the film less dark? That’s fine, but now we have an online presence with some people romanticising the idea of a Harley Quinn and Joker relationship which isn’t good! If you’re going to include two crazy characters that are in a relationship, at least show the truth behind their romance.

That’s it for the negative points! I loved the balance between the humour and seriousness. I think they balanced it perfectly and included it only in the right moments! The break up between action and establishing character back-stories were also balanced which made it much more enjoyable to watch!

Finally, I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the soundtrack and the songs fit perfectly for each scene! My personal favorite song from the soundtrack would be Sucker for Pain because it is so different to what you would normally hear! Although it wasn’t played through the film and only in the end credits, its still considered a part of the film right?

If you’re planning to watch Suicide Squad and are like me who isn’t particularly DC’s biggest fan, I’m pretty sure that this could convert you! It’s such a great film and is definitely in my top 20 list of favorite films of this year, possibly ever!
